Insect screens for windows and doors — which one to choose?

The right screen depends on where it has to work and how often you want to open it. You would protect a kitchen window you tilt open ten times a day differently from a patio you carry plates through during a barbecue. That is why, before we quote, we ask a few things: how the window opens, whether there are pets in the house, and whether there is woodland or water nearby — because out by the reservoir or on the edges of Białystok the midges can be far more of a nuisance than in the city centre.

All our window and door insect screens are made to measure, for the exact opening. As standard we use a fibreglass mesh — flexible, UV-resistant and unbreakable in the cold. For cat and dog owners a reinforced mesh (e.g. for pets) is available, which takes claws without tearing.

Below we describe the four types we fit most often: framed, roller, pleated and door screens.

Framed insect screens

This is the most popular and most affordable solution for tilt-and-turn windows. An aluminium frame made to measure from a survey, with taut mesh, clips into special brackets on the outside of the window frame — nothing needs to be drilled into the window itself. We match the frame colour to your joinery: it's available in white, brown or golden oak, so the screen stays discreet.

Removable, so seasonal

Framed screens are removable. You put them up in spring and take them down in autumn in two minutes, then store them in the cellar or garage — no tools needed. This means the mesh does not have to endure winter snow and keeps its clean look for many seasons. It is a good choice for bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms.

Roller insect screens (cassette)

A roller insect screen has the mesh wound onto a roller hidden inside a small cassette fitted above the window or door. You pull it down when you need it, and at the end of the season there is nothing to take off — the mesh retracts into the cassette on its own and stays tucked away all winter. It is a more convenient and more durable solution than a classic frame, though it costs more.

Who it suits

It comes into its own where you would rather not dismantle and store anything — for example on hard-to-reach upstairs windows, or simply if you do not enjoy the seasonal fuss. The cassette can be colour-matched and the guide rails run smoothly. Versions for balcony doors guide the mesh vertically or horizontally, depending on how the entrance is built.

Pleated insect screens

A pleated insect screen is mesh folded concertina-style (into a pleat), running in a bottom and top rail. You slide it aside like a pleated blind — gently, with one movement — and when it is not needed it folds away to a few centimetres beside the side rail. It looks modern and is very easy to use day to day.

Everyday advantages

• No threshold, or a very low one — easy to step over, even with a pushchair.
• Smooth opening with no slamming — ideal for entrances used many times a day.
• An elegant, slim profile that suits large patio doors and corner glazing.

The pleated screen is a higher-end option — chosen by people who care about comfort and looks. We will advise whether a given entrance is better served by a pleated or a sliding screen, as much depends on the width of the opening and how often you will be passing through it.

Door / sliding insect screens

Patio and balcony doors are a different matter, because we walk through them rather than just tilting them open. A window frame will not do here. We fit two solutions: hinged door insect screens that open like a leaf, and sliding screens that run along a track parallel to the door.

Hinged door screens

They work like a second, lightweight leaf with mesh — you open it, walk through, and a magnet or catch closes it behind you. Handy when you have your hands full. They are well suited to patio entrances in detached houses around Białystok.

Sliding for large glazing

With wide HST sliding doors and lift-and-slide doors the screen also runs along a track — it takes up no space and handles large openings. This is the solution for modern homes with big panes of glass. If you are planning such an opening onto the garden, it is worth thinking about the screen as early as the doors selection stage, so that everything lines up dimensionally.

Measuring and fitting

The most common reason a screen "does not hold back" mosquitoes is a badly taken measurement and a few millimetres of gap down the sides. That is why we do not send customers off with a tape measure — we come and measure ourselves. Measuring at your home is free, as is the quote. On site we check the window type, the brackets, the joinery colour and suggest which mesh will work best in each room.
