Types of interior door — framed or panel?

Choosing interior doors starts with the leaf construction, because that's what determines the weight, the sound insulation and the price. In practice you're choosing between two basic types:

• Framed doors — a light frame of timber or wood-based board faced with finishing panels, with an infill (for example a honeycomb cardboard core or a board). Lighter and usually better value — well suited to rooms and utility spaces.
• Panel (solid) doors — more substantial, with a board infill, better at dampening sound and feeling more solid. A good choice for a bedroom or study where you want quiet.

Interior doors come in two rebate variants — that is, the way the leaf meets the frame:

Rebated doors

The leaf overlaps the frame with a rebate strip that hides the gap. It's a classic, proven and usually more affordable solution — it dampens sound well and forgives small fitting imperfections.

Flush doors

The leaf sits flush with the frame in a single plane, and the hinges are often concealed. The effect is modern and minimalist, with the door looking as if it's set into the wall.
